The short films competition contains 15 films which were all made within the last 12 months and which provide a kaleidoscopic vision of images, sounds and stories of the continent that will provide audiences with a real treat.  Short films are sometimes envisaged as training grounds for feature film writer/directors, but they are much more than that, carrying integrity as small perfectly formed works of art that are often more difficult to craft well and tell a good story than some features. We are glad to be able to present this selection of films, including 4 from Ethiopia, 5 films from the Focus Features Africa First Short Film Programme (Twagga, Security, Adamt, Kwaku Ananse and Berea) and 3 from the African Metropolis short film programme (The Line Up, The Other Woman and Berea).

The range of genres and styles attest to the fact that the skills and ambitions of young filmmakers remain as varied and ambitious as ever. Their vision and spirit is very much a Renaissance one.
